YCDF Doha 2024

The Young Cultural Diplomacy Forum (YCDF) Doha 2024, convened by CSCD, brought together emerging cultural diplomats and practitioners to examine how literature, arts, sports, and tourism function as diplomatic instruments in Middle Eastern contexts. Positioned in Qatar’s cosmopolitan capital, YCDF Doha explored the Middle Eastern Renaissance while analysing how cultural and sporting initiatives advance international cooperation and soft power projection in a rapidly transforming region.

Qatar’s positioning as a regional cultural centre, combined with its investments in museums, literary institutions, and international sporting events, provided an ideal setting for examining how contemporary nations integrate cultural programming with diplomatic strategy. Doha’s multicultural character and role hosting major international events demonstrated how cultural diplomacy extends beyond traditional diplomatic channels into sports, tourism, and creative industries.

The first thematic pillar, the Middle Eastern Renaissance, convened panels examining the Islamic Golden Age, Persian literary traditions, and contemporary Arab artists, positioning the Middle East as a civilisational centre with profound contributions to human creativity. Discussions analysed how historical artistic and scholarly achievements inform contemporary cultural diplomacy while examining how today’s Middle Eastern artists address geopolitical challenges, sectarian conflicts, and identity questions through creative expression rooted in historical traditions.

The second pillar, Literature in Cultural Diplomacy, examined how literary traditions, poetry, and storytelling function as diplomatic tools enabling cross-cultural understanding. Participants engaged with Arabic literature, translation practices, and how literary exchanges foster bilateral relationships. Discussions emphasised literature’s unique capacity to access emotional and imaginative dimensions of human experience, creating understanding that transcends political disagreement.

The third pillar, Sports and Tourism in Public Policy, examined how sporting events and tourism industries function as components of comprehensive public diplomacy strategies. Workshops analysed how Qatar’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup, alongside investments in sporting infrastructure and tourism development, projects national image while engaging international audiences. Participants examined both the transformative potential and the risks of sports nationalism and tourism commodification.

YCDF Doha 2024 demonstrated that effective Middle Eastern cultural diplomacy requires recognising the region’s historical intellectual achievements while supporting contemporary creative expression addressing urgent regional challenges. The forum illustrated how literature, sports, and tourism extend diplomatic engagement beyond traditional channels while creating platforms for genuine cross-cultural understanding.
